How to Crimp Pie Crust

There are a few ways you can crimp your pie crust, but the most popular methods include just using your fingers to pinch the top and bottom crusts together or your one-crust pie with a decorative edge.

  • You could use your fingers to create a scalloped edge. First, pull the edges up and in to create a bit of a lip that stands up. Then, poke this lip from the inside with one index finger, and pinch around your fingertip from the outside with your other index finger and thumb. Repeat this process all the way around to create the classic scalloped look.
  • Try making a one-handed rope crimp. First, pull the edges of the crust up and underneath to create a lip. Then, curl your fingers into a loose fist and pinch the crust between your thumb and the side of your index finger. Repeat this all the way around the edge of the pie.
  • If you don’t want to dirty your fingers, you could just use a fork and press down on the edge of the crust so that the fork tines seal the dough together while creating a decorative pattern on your crust.
